How Massage Works in Lovina
Lovina is a line of villages along the coast road rather than a single town, and its spas follow the road. Aneka Lovina Villas & Spa, whose own site calls Lovina Beach the most developed tourism area in north Bali, sits on Jalan Raya Kalibukbuk in the centre. Bali Taman is on Tukadmungga Beach to the east, and 1000 Dream Bungalow is further east again at Pemaron. The day spas and salons are strung along the road between them.
The treatment you will be offered first nearly everywhere is Balinese massage: a firm, flowing full-body massage with oil, done on a table under a sarong or towel. The resort spas add scrubs, facials, hair treatments, manicures and pedicures around it. The small salons do massage alongside hair and nails.
Very few of the places below publish a price list on their own site, and those that do change it. Ask for the current rate when you message, and ask whether it covers the massage alone or a package with a scrub or bath.
The Resort Spas in Town
These three are inside beach resorts in or near the centre, and each describes its spa on its own site. All three sit a short ride apart on the coast road.
Aneka Spa at Aneka Lovina Villas & Spa
Setting: A beachfront hotel on Jalan Raya Kalibukbuk, in the middle of Lovina. The Buleleng tourism office's listing places it on the black sand of Lovina Beach, with an outdoor pool, two restaurants and two bars.
What they offer: In the hotel's words, "a natural relaxation and treatment assortment for health and beauty": treatments from head to toe and a full range of body treatments aimed at reducing stress. The regency's listing describes relaxing massages at Spa Aneka Lovina from well-trained therapists.
What to know: The spa page does not list individual treatments, so message the hotel for the current menu and ask whether it takes non-guests.

Best for: A massage in the middle of town, a short walk from the beach and the restaurants.
Body Tonic Spa at The Lovina
Setting: The Lovina is a resort of pool villas and suites on the beach in central Lovina. It runs sunrise dolphin trips a few hundred metres out from the resort, and keeps a small fitness studio and complimentary morning yoga in its garden.
What they offer: The resort's own page offers everything from "the standard Bali massage" to a full treatment from head to toe at its Body Tonic Spa, "any massage treatment you wish", manicures and pedicures, and hair treatments with a cream bath. The regency's listing adds that massages can be requested at the resort's spa centre.
What to know: The resort's page encourages booking spa treatments in advance. Ask whether they take guests from outside when you message.

Best for: A massage after the morning dolphin boat, without leaving the beach.
The Spa at Bali Taman Lovina
Setting: A beachfront boutique resort of 35 rooms and suites on one hectare at Tukadmungga, on the eastern side of Lovina, built in Balinese style with gardens and a free-form pool.
What they offer: The resort's site describes its Teratai Wellness Spa as combining traditional and modern healing techniques "inspired by an ancient secret recipe of the Javanese Royal Family", with trained therapists using botanical ingredients from plants and herbs.
What to know: A recent post on the resort's Instagram announced the spa's reopening as Bali Taman Spa by Handara Spa Ceylon, so the name and the menu may have moved on from the website. The feed below is the more current source, and a message to the resort will get you today's treatment list.

Other Hotels With a Spa or Massage
Three more places describe a spa or a massage service, one on its own site and two in the regency's official listing. They publish less, so treat the links as the starting point and message before you go.
Hotel Banyualit Spa 'n Resort, Lovina. The regency's listing describes a hotel of 28 rooms around a pool in tropical gardens, with a restaurant and a spa. The hotel's own website was returning an error when we checked, so start from the regency listing and the map pin, which carries recent reviews.
Araminth Spa at Nugraha Lovina Seaview Resort. The regency's listing for Nugraha Lovina Seaview Resort & Spa names Araminth Spa as the resort's spa, with facials, manicures and pedicures alongside. Araminth has its own entry in the best spas guide. Map

The Spas in the Full Guide
Four of the north coast's better-known spas already have full entries, with their treatments in their own words, in the best spas in Lovina and north Bali: The Damai, Jaya Spa at Puri Bagus Lovina, Amaris Spa at Zen Resort Bali, and RND Lovina Spa. Go there if you want a three-hour ritual with a view, a four-hands or warm-stone massage, a herbal compress, or a week of Ayurveda. Village Therapists and Massage at Your Villa
Many people who spend more than a few days on the coast end up with a therapist rather than a spa: someone who works from home in the village, or who will come to the villa. There is no directory of them and no website to link. The way to find one is to ask your villa host, your driver, or a neighbour who has lived here for a while, and to go back to the one you like.
A few things make it go well. Agree the length and the price before you start. Keep small notes to hand, since this is a cash arrangement. Say what pressure you want at the beginning, because a village massage is often strong. Expect a simple room, and possibly little English.

- Confirm the price and what it covers when you book, since rates change and most spas here do not publish them.
- Ask for medium pressure first. It is easier to ask for more than to sit through too much.
- Tip in cash for good work, handed to the therapist.
Fit It Into a Day
