The beach faces north over the Bali Sea, the water is relatively calm, and the jukung outriggers that take the dolphin watchers out at dawn wait in the shallows as the light goes. How Sunset Works on This Coast
Lovina faces north. The sun goes down to your left, off along the curve of the coast to the west, and on a clear evening the sky over the bay holds its colour well after the sun itself has gone. The Buleleng tourism office names a walk along the beach for the sunrise or the sunset as one of the main things to do in Lovina, and it is the same beach the dolphin boats leave from before dawn.
The water off Lovina is relatively calm, as the Buleleng district office puts it, so the evening light lies on a flat sea, and at low tide the wet sand holds the colour too. The Lovina beach guide covers the stretches of sand; this page is about where to sit with a glass.

On the Lovina Strip
The Sunset Bar at The Lovina
What it says about itself: The resort calls its Sunset Bar "the most beautiful location in North Bali for a delicious cocktail, whilst watching the finest sunset you have ever seen," with the chef cooking seafood, steak or nasi goreng while you watch. A recent Instagram post advertises "Sunset, sips & soulful sounds" with food, drinks and live music as the sun goes down, and says the evening is open to the public.
Where: Jalan Mas, Kalibukbuk, on the beach a short walk from the centre of Lovina. The resort describes 200 metres of beachfront. Map
Go for: a cocktail on the sand in the middle of Lovina, with dinner if you stay on.

Spice Beach Club
What it says about itself: "Experience the best sunset place in North Bali," with a beachfront area, a pool, food and drink, spa therapy and live music, and "a variety of international menus." Its website and its Instagram give different opening hours, so check before you plan a swim around the sunset.
Where: Jalan Seririt to Singaraja No. 225, Bunut Panggang, Kaliasem, on the sea side of the main road a few minutes west of the dolphin statue. Map
Go for: a swim in the late afternoon and a drink by the pool as the light goes. On Sundays the beach in front of it hosts the Lovina Sunday Market. The beach clubs guide compares it with the clubs in the south.
Saraswati Restaurant & Bar at Puri Bagus Lovina
What it says about itself: An open-air restaurant "with breathtaking views of the Bali Sea," serving international and Indonesian food from "fresh, locally sourced ingredients," for "a sunrise breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or a sunset dinner," with cocktails from the bar. The Buleleng tourism office listing describes views of the sea and the gardens.
Where: Puri Bagus Lovina, Jalan Raya Seririt Singaraja, Pemaron, the village east of Lovina on the Singaraja side. Map
Go for: a sit-down dinner that starts at sunset, away from the strip.
Penimbangan: Singaraja's Seafront
East of Lovina the coast road reaches Singaraja, and at Penimbangan the town has its own beach road with restaurants on the sand. The places here pitch themselves at people from town, so an evening at Penimbangan is a Singaraja evening.
Krisna Beachstreet
What it says about itself: Its listing with the Buleleng tourism office describes a hangout "on the beach" for friends, families and couples, and names its dish: ayam betutu ajik, served two ways, in sauce and fried. Its Instagram invites you to eat, hang out and "nikmati sunset": enjoy the sunset.

Ranggon Sunset Point and Cozy Resto
Two more places on the same stretch are listed with the Buleleng tourism office. Ranggon Sunset Point sits on Jalan Pantai Penimbangan Barat and carries the sunset in its name (Map). Cozy Resto, on Jalan Pura Segara Penimbangan, describes itself as a seafood restaurant "on the edge of Penimbangan Beach" with fruit cocktails, mocktails and wine (Map). Neither has a working website or Instagram we could find, so the listings are all we can show you.
Kerobokan Beach, East of Singaraja
Kerobokan beach is in Sawan, east of Singaraja, and has nothing to do with Kerobokan in the south. The Buleleng tourism office describes a quiet beach "good for watching both sunset and sunrise," with local stalls selling food and drinks, including fish and coconuts, and the colourful boats of local fishers pulled up on the sand. Most visitors come to look rather than to swim.
One of those stalls has a story. Koran Buleleng reports that Warung Bokir was started by Putu Ayu Darmini and her husband Nyoman Sumanasa, both from Kerobokan village, who began grilling the fish he caught in 2005 at the easternmost kiosk on the beach. More on it in the north Bali seafood guide.

Worth the Drive
The Octagon Ocean Club, West Bali National Park
What it says about itself: "Sunrise Meets Sunset." Plataran's page describes Asian and international food with oceanfront seating and views of Menjangan Island. Its Buleleng tourism office listing adds a three-storey building with a rooftop for "sunrise to sunset," a 33-metre infinity pool with a sunken bar on the oceanfront, a wooden deck over the sea, and the park's protected deer walking along the beach.
Where: Plataran Menjangan, Jalan Raya Seririt to Gilimanuk, Pejarakan, inside West Bali National Park, past Pemuteran and a long drive west of Lovina. Map
Go for: a sunset on the far northwest coast after a day at Menjangan. Stay in Pemuteran rather than driving back to Lovina in the dark.

Sunset Bar at Munduk Moding Plantation
What it says about itself: "As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with a technicolor hue, retreat to our Sunset Bar," with "panoramic views of the North Bali hills and the shimmering ocean," a lower infinity pool, cocktails and traditional snacks.
Where: Munduk Moding Plantation, Desa Gobleg, in the hills near Munduk, well above the coast. Map
Go for: the sunset seen from above, with the sea far below, at the end of a day at the twin lakes or the coffee farms. The mountain road back down to Lovina is slow in the dark, so many people make it the evening of a night in the hills.

The Free Option: The Beach at Kalibukbuk
You do not need a bar. The sand by the dolphin statue at Kalibukbuk is a public beach, and the walk along the waterline at sunset is the one the Buleleng tourism office recommends. Bring a drink, or buy one on the way down Jalan Binaria, and sit on the sand. How to Fit It In
Sunset is the natural end of a Lovina day. A common shape: dolphins at dawn, a slow morning, a waterfall or the Banjar hot springs in the afternoon, and back on the coast an hour before the sun goes down. The Lovina bars are all within a short drive of each other, so you can choose on the day by the sky. Penimbangan and Kerobokan suit an evening when you want to see the north's own sunset crowd; the national park and Munduk suit a day already spent out that way. Practical Notes
- Arrive early. Get to the table an hour before sunset. The best seats at the beach bars go first.
- Message ahead. Opening hours change and some places differ between their website and their Instagram. Every entry links to the source.
- Cash. Beach warungs usually want cash. The resorts take cards, but ask.
- Getting back. If you are drinking, book a driver for the return.
- Repellent. Bring it for the evening.
- Sundays. The Lovina Sunday Market runs on the beach at Spice Beach Club.
