Wellness villas in north Bali are private houses with the equipment built in: a yoga pavilion by the sea, a spa corner off the garden, a pool long enough to swim laps, a gym, and a therapist who comes to the villa. This is what the properties on the north coast actually list, and when a retreat centre serves you better than a house.

In Brief

The north's wellness villas carry the parts of a retreat inside the rental. Villa Bali Il Mare at Pemuteran has a yoga pavilion, a lit tennis court and a 25-metre infinity pool. Villa Lovina Hill Paradise lists a spa corner, a gym and an infinity pool with a jacuzzi, with free use of the spa room and gym included. Villa Sunset above Lovina has a fully equipped gym and a padel court, and Villa Belvedere at Lokapaksa has a home gym. Villa Oscar's pool is sized for lengths, and Sea View Pool Villa's runs twenty metres with a heated jacuzzi beside it. Every listing here offers massage at the villa. If you want a programme rather than a setting, Zen Resort at Ume Anyar runs Ayurveda under a resident doctor, and The Damai at Kayu Putih makes its own spa oils. Every property below is described from its own pages, linked.

What Turns a Villa into a Wellness Base

Four things decide whether a house supports a week of practice or just looks the part in the photographs.

Flat, shaded, level ground. A yoga pavilion is ideal. A flat lawn or a wide covered terrace does the same job for one person and a mat. Ask for a photograph of the space at the hour you would use it.

A pool you can swim in. A pool for lengths needs length and depth more than a view. Villa Bali Il Mare's is 25 by 5 metres, which its listing calls half Olympic length; Sea View Pool Villa's runs twenty metres; Villa Oscar's is 66 square metres and described as long enough for laps.

A kitchen that will cook plain. Every listing on this page includes staff who cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the cost of the ingredients, and the useful question is whether the cook will do your food rather than the house menu: no oil, no sugar, the vegetables you ask for. Say it at the booking stage, not on arrival.

Quiet you can rely on. Ask the owner what is happening near the property during your dates. Two listings answer part of it already: Villa Bali Il Mare is not surrounded by other houses or near the main road, and Villa Banyan has no direct neighbours, with a village temple behind it used for ceremonies two or three times a year.

The Villas

Villa Bali Il Mare, Pemuteran

A beachfront house at Pemuteran listed for eight, which the listing describes as four suites of about 75 square metres each with individual bathrooms, including a master suite, inside roughly 750 square metres of interior space under a fifteen-metre ceiling, on 1.3 hectares of land. The infinity pool is 25 by 5 metres with a shallow entry and a depth that runs from 1.5 to 2.2 metres. Outside there is also a tennis court surfaced in coated concrete and lit for night play, a terrace, and a yoga pavilion the listing sets aside for stretching, reading or sleeping with the sound of the waves. Six staff are listed with the house.

  • Setting: beachfront at Pemuteran, away from the main road and other houses
  • Wellness features: yoga pavilion, 25-metre infinity pool, lit tennis court
  • A good fit for: a small group who want a practice space and a pool built for swimming

Pemuteran itself is a small bay base on the north-west coast; the Pemuteran guide covers the bay, the reef and what a day there looks like.

Three bedrooms for up to six on a hill plateau above Lovina, with green hills, rice fields and the sea in view. The pool is the reason it sits on this page: 66 square metres with an overflow edge towards the sea, described on the listing as large enough to swim laps. The garden runs to about 1,350 square metres of palms, fruit trees and flowering plants, which is a lot of ground for a morning walk before anyone else is up. Each bedroom has a private bathroom and air conditioning, and staff cover cooking, housekeeping and the pool.

  • Bedrooms and guests: 3 bedrooms with private bathrooms, listed for up to 6
  • Setting: hill plateau above Lovina, a six to eight minute drive from town

Six bedrooms listed for twelve adults on the beach in central Lovina, with a twenty-metre infinity pool and a heated jacuzzi facing the Bali Sea. The length is the point here: twenty metres is a swim rather than a dip, and the jacuzzi beside it is the recovery. Kitchen staff prepare meals at no charge beyond ingredients, which makes a set eating pattern easy to hold for a week.

  • Bedrooms and guests: 6 bedrooms, listed for 12 adults
  • Setting: Lovina beachfront, five minutes on foot from the centre
  • Wellness features: 20-metre infinity pool, heated jacuzzi, staff cooking

Villa Banyan and Villa Lou

Two more with one wellness angle each. Villa Banyan at Umeanyar has five bedrooms, an eighteen by six metre infinity pool at the cliff edge, and massage and beauty treatments arranged at the villa; its listing puts Zen Resort 50 metres up the road. Villa Lou has three en-suite bedrooms for six on the black sand near Lovina, with a private pool, a housemaid who also cooks, and massage at the villa listed as an option.

Bringing the Treatment to the House

Much of the north's wellness comes to the villa through the gate.

Massage at the villa. Every Palm Living listing on this page offers a massage service at extra cost, and Villa Banyan's adds a full range of beauty treatments in the privacy of the villa. A therapist on your terrace in the late afternoon is the simplest form wellness takes up here. Balinese massage explains what the technique actually is and what to ask for.

Ask the staff who they use. The villa's guest relations service arranges massages and other requests, and the staff will know the therapists nearby. Traditional healers in north Bali covers the wider practice, including the balian.

Spas within a drive. The best spas in Lovina and north Bali lists the resort and day spas along the coast, each from its own menu.

Hot springs. Banjar Hot Springs is twenty to thirty minutes west of central Lovina, with spring water pouring from carved naga spouts into stone pools.

Yoga and sound. The Damai offers private and public yoga sessions, and Zen Resort holds group yoga, pranayama and meditation sessions daily. Yoga in Bali covers the styles and how classes run; sound healing in north Bali covers the gong and bowl practitioners.

When a Retreat Serves You Better

A villa gives you the setting and leaves the structure to you. Three north-coast properties supply the structure instead.

Zen Resort Bali at Ume Anyar, Seririt, runs Ayurveda under a resident Ayurvedic doctor with Balinese therapists at its Amaris Spa. Mornings open with Zen Chi, a sunrise sequence of gentle stretching, pranayama and meditation, and the kitchen cooks from the resort's own farm and herb gardens, with meals tailored to your constitution on the doctor's guidance.

The Damai at Kayu Putih, Lovina, makes its spa oils and products at home from traditional Balinese recipes, using only virgin organic coconut oil produced for it in the village. Its Bali Boreh Spice ritual combines massage, reflexology, a body spice rub, a flower bath and aromatherapy.

Gaia Oasis at Tejakula, east along the coast, has two linked properties, the Pantai beach resort and the Abasan mountain retreat, each with its own spa. The beach resort has an octagonal seminar house fitted with meditation pillows and yoga mats, and serves largely vegetarian meals using produce from its organic gardens.

Practical Notes

  • Say what you need at the booking stage. Diet, a mat, a massage table, a quiet room and a practice space are all easy with notice and awkward on arrival.
  • Bring your own mat if you practise daily. None of the villa listings here mentions yoga mats.
  • Plan around the staff hours. Most listings say the staff do not live on site and work flexible eight-hour days, so agree the hours that suit an early practice and a late dinner.
  • Ask about ceremony days. Ask whether any village ceremonies fall during your stay and how they affect the staff and the quiet.
  • Allow about three hours from Ngurah Rai airport over the mountains, and treat the drive as part of the first day.

FAQ

What is a wellness villa?

A private rental house with the equipment for a wellness stay already in it: a yoga or practice space, a gym or a lap pool, sometimes a treatment room, and staff who can cook to a diet. It is a setting rather than a programme.

Which north Bali villas have a yoga space?

Villa Bali Il Mare at Pemuteran lists a yoga pavilion by the sea. The other houses here offer garden and terrace space rather than a dedicated pavilion, so ask the owner for a photograph of the area you would use.

Can you get a massage at your villa in north Bali?

Yes. Every Palm Living listing on this page offers a massage service at the villa at extra cost, arranged through the villa staff or the guest relations service.

Is there a villa with a gym in north Bali?

Villa Sunset has a fully equipped gym with a rack, rowing, ski and bike ergometers, a treadmill and free weights. Villa Lovina Hill Paradise includes free use of its gym room, and Villa Belvedere lists a home gym.

Which villa pool is best for swimming laps?

Villa Bali Il Mare's infinity pool is 25 by 5 metres, Sea View Pool Villa's runs twenty metres, and Villa Oscar's is 66 square metres with an overflow edge and is described on its listing as long enough to swim lengths.

Should we book a villa or a retreat?

Book a villa when you want the setting and your own rhythm, with treatments brought in. Book a retreat when you want the day planned, the food prescribed and a practitioner on site, which on this coast means Zen Resort, The Damai or Gaia Oasis.

Are there hot springs near the wellness villas?

Banjar Hot Springs is twenty to thirty minutes west of central Lovina, and Banyuwedang is near Menjangan on the north-west coast, closer to Pemuteran. The best spas guide covers both.
