North Bali has no yoga town. It has a scatter of shalas: a garden resort and a beach resort on the Lovina coast, an Ayurvedic sanctuary in the hills behind Seririt, a handful of mountain lodges around Munduk, two long-running retreats on the quiet east shore and a dive lodge in Pemuteran. This page lists each one in its own words, with its site, its Instagram and a map pin, so you can see what it teaches before you write to it.

In Brief

For a retreat week with daily classes on the coast, look at Alamanda and Santhika in Lovina, or Puri Bagus Lovina at Pemaron, which also hosts visiting teachers and trainings. For yoga folded into Ayurvedic treatment, Zen Resort at Ume Anyar. For cool mountain air, Munduk Moding Plantation, Sanak, Munduk Tentrem and Puri Lumbung in the Munduk hills. For a long, quiet stay by the sea on the east coast, Prana Veda at Bondalem or Gaia Oasis at Tejakula. For yoga between dives, Kubuku in Pemuteran. Retreat dates and rates change, so each entry links to the place's own retreat or class page, which holds the current ones.

  • Often paired with: Ayurveda, sound healing, massage, water blessings, dolphin mornings and waterfall walks
  • Drop-in classes: a few places sell single classes to non-guests; most keep classes for resident guests

Choosing a Yoga Retreat in the North

Three questions sort the list quickly.

Coast or hills? The coast around Lovina is warm, flat and close to the dolphin boats, the hot springs and the town's warungs. The Munduk hills sit roughly an hour to an hour and a half inland and uphill, with cool mornings and evenings, rice terraces, coffee and clove gardens and waterfall trails. The east coast around Tejakula is quieter than both.

A programme or a place? Zen Resort, Santhika and Prana Veda build the whole day around practice and treatment. Alamanda and Puri Bagus run a class schedule you can join or skip. The Munduk lodges mostly offer yoga as one part of a stay, with teachers arranged for you.

Your own group? Alamanda, Puri Bagus, Zen Resort, Munduk Tentrem, Munduk Cabins and Prana Veda all say on their sites that they host outside teachers and groups.

Lovina and the Coast Nearby

Alamanda Lovina Resort

Setting: A small garden resort on Jl. Gang Cempaka at Kayu Putih, in Lovina. It describes itself as a boutique sanctuary for yoga, wellness and retreats, with twelve rooms, two pools and a garden that keeps growing into the buildings.

What they offer: The Yoga Shala is open on three sides under timber and thatch, with room for 24 mats. Its programme rotates between Hatha, Hatha Flow, Gentle, Yin, Yin-Yang and a sunset stretch, with gong, bowl and voice sound sessions, private one-to-one classes, massage and bodywork. Classes are included in every stay and open to visitors and local residents when there is space. Alamanda runs its own retreats in small groups led, in its words, by facilitators who live on this coast, and the whole property can be booked for a group, with menus built with the organiser. Plant-based, gluten-free and Ayurvedic-leaning menus are normal here rather than special requests.

What to know: The site carries the weekly class schedule and a booking form for single classes, so check it before you turn up. Alamanda also arranges dawn dolphin trips with local crews.

Best for: A slow week of daily practice on the coast; drop-in classes if you are staying elsewhere in Lovina.

Puri Bagus Lovina

Setting: A beachfront resort at Pemaron, just east of central Lovina, with traditional Balinese buildings in gardens on the sea. The same resort runs Jaya Spa, covered in our guide to spas in north Bali.

What they offer: Hatha yoga taught by Balinese in-house instructors, concentrating on asana, pranayama and meditation (dhyana, in their words). Staying guests can join the scheduled classes without booking; visitors book ahead, and private sessions can be arranged. The Maharani Shala Pavilion is an open-air rectangular hall of about 133 square metres with a high ceiling and wooden floor. The resort's group-retreat page lists the kinds of gathering it hosts: yoga and meditation retreats, sound healing, prana chakra healing, qigong, and yoga and meditation teacher training courses, with a Balinese blessing at the hotel temple to open them.

What to know: Current class times and group packages are on the resort's yoga page and group retreat page.

Best for: A beach stay with classes on the side; teachers looking for a venue for a group or a training.

Santhika Retreat Center

Setting: A retreat centre based at Jl. Kamboja, Kaliasem, in Lovina. Its main centre, Dream Hill, is described as a handcrafted wooden ashram on a hillside with views of the sea, rice fields and Kaliasem village; guests on shorter programmes may stay at its budget guesthouse, Lovina Loca, in the centre of town.

What they offer: Retreats built around emotional healing, run year-round. The yoga side covers Hatha, restorative yoga, Balinese Healing Yoga Markandeya, meditation and sound healing. Alongside it: private sessions with Balinese healers, energy and chakra work, fire ceremonies, and purification rituals at Santhipala, a waterfall the centre says is reached only through its programmes. The team, in its own words, includes seventh-generation healers, traditional Balinese yoga masters and internationally certified teachers. It also runs trainings in Balinese massage and in what it calls aroma psychology and Aroma Kundalini Yoga, and a spa open to walk-in guests.

What to know: Programmes are personalised and start on set weekdays; the how our retreats work page explains the formats. This is a healing retreat first. If you want a straightforward class, one of the resort shalas will suit you better.

Zen Resort Bali

Setting: A hillside resort in the village of Ume Anyar, near Seririt, west of Lovina, bordered by forest and fed by natural springs. Its site says it has cared for guests for two decades.

What they offer: Yoga, pranayama and meditation are part of every Zen retreat, alongside Ayurvedic treatments at its Amaris Spa. The day opens at sunrise with Zen Chi, a 45-minute ritual of stretching, pranayama and meditation; later sessions cover alignment-based practice and a gentle, restorative close to the day. The teaching team, a yoga teacher and the resident Ayurvedic doctor, lists Hatha, Ashtanga, pranayama, meditation and Yoga Nidra. Practice moves between an elevated open-air space with views out to the Bali Sea, a covered yoga hall for rainy days and a forest pavilion for smaller groups. Retreats run from a short stress-release stay to longer purification and rejuvenation programmes, and one pairs Ayurveda with scuba diving.

What to know: Zen hosts outside retreat leaders as well as its own programmes; see host your retreat. The resort's Ayurveda is covered in more depth in our spa guide.

The Munduk Hills

Munduk sits high on the ridge above the twin lakes, and yoga here comes with cool air and long views. Most places in the hills fold yoga into a stay rather than running a fixed retreat calendar. Our Munduk guide covers the village, and the eco-lodges in Munduk page looks at these same lodges as places to sleep.

Munduk Moding Plantation

Setting: A nature resort inside a coffee plantation at Gobleg, in the highlands of north Bali, with views across the central mountains and out to the sea.

What they offer: Personalised yoga sessions for guests with the resort's yoga instructors, set outdoors among the gardens. The yoga page pairs sessions with a traditional Balinese massage or a three-course lunch at the resort's Warung Bongkot, and there is a separate wellness and detox package. The kitchen cooks with organic produce grown locally.

Best for: Yoga as part of a comfortable highland stay, with the plantation walks on the doorstep.

Sanak Retreat Bali

Setting: Eleven wooden bungalows among rice fields at Banjar Dinas Menagung, in the village of Kayuputih, which Sanak places near Munduk.

What they offer: A yoga instructor who, in Sanak's words, adapts to your own style or chooses one for you. The spa uses scrubs and oils blended in small batches by the Sanak family, and the menu includes an energy healing session followed by meditation. Village guides lead walks to a waterfall and to a holy spring where a Balinese healer offers water blessings.

Best for: Private sessions in a small, quiet retreat among the rice fields.

Munduk Tentrem Resort

Setting: A mountain resort on Jl. Raya Asah Gobleg, at about 1,300 metres, looking over hills and rainforest.

What they offer: Complimentary morning yoga for in-house guests in some months of the year, and private sessions at other times depending on the instructor. Groups can book three spaces for their own retreat: an open-air amphitheatre for small groups, the panorama restaurant terrace outside meal hours, and flat lawns for larger sessions. The resort will arrange a teacher, or you can bring your own. It also has an organic farm you can tour.

What to know: The months and days of the free classes are on the resort's yoga page; sign up at reception the evening before.

Puri Lumbung Cottages

Setting: Cottages in Munduk village made from old rice barns, set in the cool mountain air with views over rice fields and clove gardens toward the sea.

What they offer: Daily yoga classes with the lodge's own instructors, for beginners and experienced students, and meeting halls that visiting yoga retreats use. The same programme includes the Arathi spa, trekking, cooking classes and a class in the herbal drinks the village calls loloh.

Best for: Yoga mixed with walking and village life, at the most village-centred lodge on this list.

Tejakula and the East Coast

The coast east of Singaraja is dark sand, fishing boats and very little traffic, about 45 minutes to an hour from Lovina. Our Tejakula guide covers the villages, and Yeh Mampeh waterfall is close by.

Prana Veda Bali Sanctuary

Setting: A small sanctuary on Jalan Arcana at Bondalem, directly on a quiet lava-sand beach, with a coral reef at the doorstep. It opened in 2010. Its founder, Renate, ran her own therapy practice in Germany for over twenty years and studied Ayurveda, yoga and meditation in India.

What they offer: Weekly retreats that combine gentle yoga, meditation, massage and Ayurveda, with somatic yoga and sound healing in the mix. The fullest week adds an aqua healing session, a form of bodywork in warm water, in a solar-heated pool. There is an Ayurveda wellness week and three detox programmes chosen with you on arrival. Meals come partly from the sanctuary's own permaculture garden, kept since 2014.

What to know: Retreats usually start on a Saturday; the retreats page has the current weeks. The sanctuary can also be rented by groups.

Best for: A full week away with yoga, water and the sea, far from any town.

Gaia Oasis

Setting: Two properties at Tejakula: Abasan, a mountain retreat bordered by a protected community forest, and Pantai, a beach resort. Gaia describes itself as a retreat and resort with a non-profit foundation that works with the local community.

What they offer: At Abasan, yoga, meditation and healing sessions take place in the Mountain Lotus Room, open on one side to a lotus pond, and in the Forest Shala, an open-air bale of alang-alang grass, bamboo and recycled ironwood that once served as telegraph poles. Private paid classes with local teachers can be arranged at both properties. Other sessions, paid or by donation, depend on which practitioners are in residence, and visiting seminar leaders run their own courses. The Abasan kitchen is vegetarian.

What to know: Gaia stopped taking yoga volunteers in 2023, so what is on offer depends on who is in residence. Check its seminars and events calendar and contact the course leader directly.

Best for: A long, simple stay, or a course with a visiting teacher, in the hills above the east coast.

Pemuteran

Kubuku Eco Dive Lodge and Yoga

Setting: An eco dive lodge in Pemuteran, down a lane about 100 metres off the Seririt to Gilimanuk road, a few minutes from the centre of the village. Pemuteran is about 90 minutes west of Lovina.

What they offer: A yoga studio in the garden with daily yoga classes and meditation. The lodge has its own dive centre with a stated focus on conservation, a restaurant serving healthy and organic meals, and a spa.

Contact: kubukubali.com · Map · Kubuku Bali on Instagram

Best for: Divers who want a class after the boats come in. See Pemuteran diving and snorkelling for the reef.

How to Fit It In

A retreat of a week or more usually means staying where you practise. Shorter trips can mix: base yourself on the coast, take classes at Alamanda or Puri Bagus, and spend a night or two in Munduk for the hills. Brahmavihara Arama, the Buddhist monastery above Banjar, holds half-day meditation gatherings that close with gentle yoga; it is covered in meditation retreats in north Bali.

Good pairings on rest days: the Banjar hot springs, a dawn dolphin trip from Lovina, the Munduk waterfall trails, or a melukat water blessing. For the wider scene, see wellness in north Bali, sound healing in north Bali and our island-wide guide to yoga in Bali. If you are looking at a teacher training, start with yoga teacher training in Bali.

If you would rather have your own house and walk to classes, Palm Living's villas are around Lovina, within easy reach of the coastal shalas; Munduk, Tejakula and Pemuteran are each an hour or more away.

Practical Notes

  • Book direct. Every place above has its own site, and most answer on WhatsApp. Ask what is included: classes, meals, treatments, transfers.
  • Ask who teaches. Several places arrange teachers on request, so ask whether classes run during your dates.
  • Bring layers to Munduk. Mornings and evenings in the hills are cool.
  • Temples and ceremonies: if a programme includes a water blessing or temple visit, wear a sarong and sash; the place will usually lend them. Balinese temple etiquette covers the basics.
  • Getting here: see getting to north Bali. Several retreats offer airport transfers; ask when you book.
