Menjangan is the headline site, an island inside West Bali National Park. The park names snorkeling and diving around Menjangan as its most visited activities.

The water is some of the clearest in Bali, and a wall drops off beside shallow coral gardens that suit every level.

Where and how: off the northwest coast. The park lists Labuan Lalang and Banyuwedang as its official entrances, and boats also leave from Pemuteran and Sumberkima.

Pemuteran: the Best Base, with Reefs off the Beach

Pemuteran is the best base for snorkeling in the north. Its bay is calm, with reefs you can swim to from the shore and more sites a boat ride out.

Close to the beach is the Biorock reef-restoration project. Its coral nursery structures have stood in the village's marine protected area since 2000.

Where and how: on the northwest coast, about 90 minutes west of Lovina. Swim out from the beach, or take a boat to the better sites.

Lovina: Gentle Water for a First Try

Lovina has gentle, easy water for a first try. Its reefs are modest next to those of Pemuteran and Menjangan, and the calm conditions make it a fine place to get comfortable.

Snorkeling here is often combined with the dawn dolphin trip. Some dolphin boats add a snorkel stop afterwards, so ask the captain when you book.

Tejakula and Les: Quiet Coves in the Northeast

How to Snorkel in North Bali, in Five Steps

Choose the shore or a boat. Pemuteran and Lovina have reefs you can swim out to from the beach. Menjangan and the better Pemuteran sites are a short boat ride with an operator.
Arrange the park side for Menjangan. The island is inside the national park, so the crossing starts from one of the park's entrance points. The park side is part of what you arrange with the boat.
Bring or rent gear. Operators and lodges provide masks and fins. A mask that fits well makes the day, so bring your own if you have one.
Go in the morning. The water is calmest and clearest early, and at Menjangan the light is best before midday. The dry season gives the most reliable conditions.
Look after the reef. Use reef-safe sunscreen, do not touch or stand on coral, and keep your distance from marine life. At Pemuteran, the restoration project lets you see how fragile these reefs are and how they recover.

The Best Time to Snorkel: Dry-Season Mornings

The dry season runs from April to October and gives the calmest, clearest water. June to September is the most reliable stretch.

Mornings beat afternoons all year round. The northwest is one of Bali's drier corners, so conditions hold up even in the shoulder months. After heavy rain, visibility drops for a day or two.
