What Counts as a Boutique Hotel Here
For this guide, a boutique hotel is a small, individually run place with a character of its own. Where a hotel gives a number, it runs from thirteen houses at Villa Boréh to twenty-six places to stay at Elevate Bali, and most have a restaurant, a pool and a spa. Several are run by a family or by the people who built them.
The word "boutique" is the hotel's own where it uses it. Rambutan, Lovina Haven and The Menjangan all describe themselves that way. The others made the list because they are small and individual, and each says in its own words what it is trying to be.
A few things are the same up here wherever you stay. The north coast beaches are dark volcanic sand. The towns are quiet at night. Lovina and Just Inland
Lovina is the string of beach villages west of Singaraja, and the easiest base in the north: restaurants and the dawn dolphin boats are in the centre at Kalibukbuk, with quieter stretches either side. The complete Lovina guide explains the villages one by one.

Rambutan Boutique Hotel
Setting: On Jalan Mawar in central Lovina, a short walk from the beach.
In their words: Rambutan says it is family run, with the family living on site. Its rooms and villas are spaced out through a large tropical garden of rambutan, coconut and guava trees, with two swimming pools, and Balinese craftsmen built the place from local materials. On its own site the hotel talks about a friendly local team, spacious rooms and mature trees and flowering gardens. In its listing with the regency tourism office, it adds that it has planted more than two hectares of trees in the hills behind Lovina to offset the carbon it produces.

Lovina Haven Boutique Resort
Setting: On the beach at Lovina.
In their words: The resort describes itself as a boutique beach resort with the feel of a quiet Balinese village. Its rooms look over a tropical garden, its suites open straight onto the garden and some have an open-air bathtub, and its beachfront villas sit raised above the sand with a view out to sea. Every room lists air conditioning and 24-hour room dining.

The Damai
Setting: On Jl. Damai at Kayu Putih, inland from the Lovina coast. The resort calls itself a small resort with a big view.
In their words: The Damai has fifteen villas set in a garden. Some have their own pool and some a veranda, and the resort says every one has a view, with the smell of cloves from the spice plantations nearby carried in on the breeze. The villa types run from one for two adults with a small veranda and an outdoor Balinese shower to one for four adults with two bedrooms and two pools. The kitchen cooks brasserie dishes and Balinese classics with organic vegetables from the resort's own gardens and fish from the Bali Sea, and the spa makes its oils and rubs from old recipes. Pemuteran and West Bali National Park
Pemuteran is a small fishing and diving village on the far northwest coast, on a calm bay at the edge of the national park. Many of the hotels here are bungalows in beachfront gardens with a dive centre on site, for divers and snorkelers heading to Menjangan Island. Pondok Sari Beach Resort & Spa
Setting: On the beach at Pemuteran, in a Balinese garden that runs down to ketapang trees at the shore.
In their words: Pondok Sari's bungalows were handcrafted and sit in the garden among traditional artworks brought from across Java and Bali. The spa and the art store are in carved Joglo-style buildings, the Javanese timber house form. Each room has a private porch over the garden and an outdoor shower, in four types from Standard to Villa. The restaurant is built of old wood and opens onto the garden by the beach, and Karang Divers runs dives and courses from the resort. The founder was Rolf Lohmann, a travel photographer who came to Bali to take pictures and stayed to build the place with his local partner, Malik Tarigan. Lohmann died in 2013; the resort says the Tarigan family now carries it on together with the Lohmann family.

Taman Sari Bali Resort & Spa
Setting: On the beach at Pemuteran, in the Gerokgak district of Buleleng.
In their words: Taman Sari has villas, suites and cottages, a beachfront restaurant, a sea-view pool with a bar beside it, and a spa where treatments can be taken indoors or on the beach. It describes itself as a place for families and newlyweds. The resort says the coral restoration project, run by the foundation Yayasan Karang Lestari with the Global Coral Reef Alliance, can be seen right off its beach, and its site lists the 2012 UNDP Equator Prize alongside it. Karang Divers is listed on its site too.

Best for: Families who want a beach pool and room service, and anyone who wants to snorkel over the restoration reefs from the hotel.
The Menjangan
Setting: Inside West Bali National Park on the northwest coast, on 382 hectares. The resort says it is the largest inside the park's boundaries.
In their words: The Menjangan calls itself "an intimate boutique resort", casual and quiet. The Monsoon Lodge has 14 Deluxe Rooms and 2 Suites around a pool, with timber floors and alang-alang thatch; there are Beach Villas in the Javanese Joglo style a few steps from the water, and The Residence, a private clifftop house with three bedrooms. The Bali Tower Bistro sits in a tower built from five huge logs that rises above the tree line, and the Pantai Restaurant is on the beach. The Mangrove Spa has three open-air bales among the mangroves near Sentigi Beach. From the jetty you can kayak around Bajul Bay or take a boat to Menjangan; on land there is birdwatching, walking, mountain biking and horse riding.

Munduk and the Highlands
Munduk sits on a ridge in the cool central mountains above Lakes Tamblingan and Buyan, among coffee and clove gardens and waterfall trails. Elevate Bali
Setting: In the Munduk highlands, looking over jungle and mountains.
In their words: Elevate Bali describes itself as a mountain retreat in the cool highlands, pairing contemporary design with Balinese touches across twenty-six places to stay. Its villas run from one for two people to a 200-square-metre villa for six adults, most with a pool and a jungle view. It offers private spa rituals and dinners with a view, and points guests to Lake Tamblingan, with its temples and canoe rides, and to the waterfalls in the rainforest, which it says are minutes away.

Tejakula and the East Coast
East of Singaraja the coast road runs through fishing villages with jukung outriggers on the sand and very few visitors. The places to stay here are small and far apart, and most are built for staying put: a garden, a pool, the sea in front. See Tejakula for the villages themselves.

The Kirana Tembok
Setting: On the coast at Tembok village, Tejakula, among farmland growing herbs and plantation crops, looking over the Bali Sea.
In their words: The Kirana calls itself an eco-friendly agro resort. Its Rumah Proses Bali is a set of open pavilions of local wood, bamboo and dried reeds, a traditional Balinese kitchen where guests watch old methods of processing local produce and take a cooking class. Rooms run from superior rooms over the garden to deluxe garden bungalows with a private terrace and a two-bedroom family suite with a view of the sea through the coconut palms. Kayu-Kayu, the beachfront restaurant, cooks Balinese, Thai, Indonesian and European dishes with produce from the local market and fishermen.

Poinciana Resort
Setting: On Jl. Tejakula-Tianyar at Tembok, in the Tejakula district, facing the sea.
In their words: Poinciana has 21 rooms and villas across a garden compound by the sea, in a traditional Balinese style of natural wood, garden paths and shaded corners. The sea in front is calm and swimmable, the resort says, with a coral reef close to shore for light snorkelling, and the spa offers Balinese and warm stone massage. It was started by Nyoman, who wanted a quiet place by the sea when the land was still empty and overgrown. The resort is frank that it is for people who want less to do, and it hosts small group retreats, with practice spaces inside the compound.

Villa Boréh Beach Resort and Spa
Setting: On the Singaraja-Amlapura road at Sembiran, which the resort describes as a simple fishing village with the sea directly in front.
In their words: Villa Boréh says it has been a wellness and retreat centre on the north coast for more than 25 years. It has thirteen houses, hardly two alike, with two swimming pools, a plunge pool, two yoga spaces and a spa. The houses include an open-concept hut over three levels near the pool and the beach, and a two-storey house with its own pool for a family or group. Groups can book part of the grounds, or all of it, with meals and yoga arranged around their programme. The resort asks guests to avoid using electricity they do not need.

Boutique Hotel or Private Villa?
A small hotel suits a short stay, a couple, or anyone who wants a restaurant and a front desk and no cooking or planning. How to Choose and Book
- Start with the area. Lovina for the dolphins and restaurants, Pemuteran for the reef, Munduk for cool air and waterfalls, the east coast for real quiet. The drive between them takes a good part of a day, so pick one or two bases rather than one of each.
- Book on the hotel's own site. Every hotel above has one, and booking direct lets you ask the questions a platform cannot answer.
- Ask what the rate includes: breakfast, airport transfer, spa credit, and whether the room you are looking at has its own pool or shares one.
- Check the pin. Several hotels described as "Lovina" or "Pemuteran" sit some way along the coast from the centre. The map links above show where each one really is.

Practical Notes
- Getting there: every area here is a long drive from the airport in the south; getting to north Bali sets out the routes and a driver is the easy way in.
- Getting around: outside central Lovina you will need a driver or a scooter to go anywhere but the beach, and hotels can usually arrange one; private drivers in north Bali explains how it works.
