The north is already the cheaper side of Bali, and much of its budget accommodation is small and family-run: a guest room in a village house, a garden hotel near the Lovina beach, a homestay on the Munduk ridge, a shared lodge inside the national park. This guide covers the budget accommodation in north Bali that the regency tourism office lists as a budget hotel or a homestay, what each says about itself, and how to book it, with a link and a map pin for every one.
In Brief
In Lovina, Lovinalife Room & Cafe is a simple pool-and-garden hotel about ten minutes' walk from the beach, and Villa Agung Beach Inn, Binaria Museum Hotel and Villa Baba Sunset Beach Inn sit on or by the sand. Inland from Seririt, the village of Mayong has three small stays: Raka's Guest House, the Rumah Riang holiday home and MAYONG BALI Villa & Hostel, which has a dormitory room. In Munduk, Meme Surung Homestay and Swarbali Lodge are small, and two lodges from our Munduk eco-lodges guide also appear in the regency's budget lists. Around Pemuteran there are family homestays, and inside West Bali National Park, Menjangan Ecolodge has shared camps. How Budget Accommodation Works Here
The Buleleng regency tourism office keeps a public directory of places to stay, sorted into star hotels, budget hotels, homestays and villas. Every place on this page is in its budget-hotel or homestay list, which is the fairest way to call somewhere "budget" without printing a price that will be wrong by next season.
Homestays are rooms in or beside a family compound, and you share something of the family's day, from the morning offerings to the sounds of the village. Breakfast is usually made by the family, and several hosts on this page will cook dinner or take you walking. Read Balinese offerings explained before you go and you will understand much of what you see from the veranda.
Budget hotels in the regency's list range from simple rooms around a pool to beach inns with a restaurant and a museum-hotel full of antiques.
Dormitory beds exist too. The two places on this page with them are a village guesthouse in Mayong and a lodge inside the national park.

Lovina
Most of the regency's budget-hotel listings are along the Lovina coast, many of them in Kalibukbuk, where the restaurants, the beach and the dolphin boats are on foot. The complete Lovina guide explains the villages.
Lovinalife Room & Cafe
Setting: On the main Seririt-Singaraja road in Lovina, about a ten-minute walk from Lovina Beach, by its own count.
In their words: A simple, clean hotel with an indoor café, an outdoor garden and rooms that face the garden and the pool. Rooms have air conditioning, a desk and a shower. Breakfast is continental with fresh fruit and juice, the café serves Western and Indonesian food for lunch and dinner, and halal options are available.

Lovinalife Room & Cafe on Instagram
Best for: A clean room, a pool and good coffee within walking distance of the beach.
Villa Agung Beach Inn
Setting: On the beach at Tukadmungga, at the eastern end of Lovina.
What the listing says: The inn's regency listing describes rooms in a traditional Balinese style, each with a balcony over the pool or the sea, an outdoor pool, massage, and the beach a few steps away. Its old website no longer works, so the listing and the map are the places to check it.

Best for: A sea-view room without paying for a villa.
Binaria Museum Hotel
Setting: On Jalan Binaria in Kalibukbuk, about a minute's walk from the beach.
What the listing says: The hotel is built around a private collection of antiques on display inside. It has a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor pool, a garden and massage, and every room has its own bathroom and air conditioning. The regency also lists a Binaria Museum Cafe in Kalibukbuk.

Best for: Staying right in the centre, with something to look at on a slow afternoon.
Villa Baba Sunset Beach Inn
Setting: On the beach at Temukus, at the western end of Lovina.
What the listing says: A small inn in front of the beach with three cottage rooms and one family room.

Best for: A family who want one room together by the sea.

Mayong: A Village Stay Inland
Mayong is a village inland from Seririt, on the road up to Pupuan, among rice terraces and valleys, and it is building a small village-tourism trade of its own. It is a quiet base with no beach, and two of the three places below are family homes that take guests.
Raka's Guest House
Setting: In the centre of Mayong, on Jalan Seririt-Pupuan.
In their words: Raka's is the family home of Gusti Putu Swadnyana, opened to guests. It has four air-conditioned rooms, each with its own bathroom and hot water, a kitchen and a swimming pool looking over the valley. The family cooks traditional Balinese food and can arrange cycling, trekking and walks into the rice terraces around the village.

Best for: Couples and families who want to live in a Balinese village for a few days.
Rumah Riang
Setting: On Jl. Kiskinda in Mayong, next door to the hosts' family house.
In their words: A two-bedroom holiday home that you have to yourselves. Both bedrooms are upstairs, each with a double bed and a single bed and a large bathroom with a hot shower; downstairs is a living room and a kitchen, and there is a private pool looking over green hills. Breakfast is included, and your hosts Putu and Ria will cook Balinese lunches and dinners. Your host leads a guided walk through the rice fields from the door.

Best for: A family or two couples sharing a whole house, with a cook next door.
MAYONG BALI Villa & Hostel
Setting: On Jl. Raya Mayong-Banyuatis, among shaded gardens in Mayong.
What the listing says: Four rooms in three kinds: a one-bedroom villa, a dormitory room for backpackers, and a family room of two connecting rooms. All have air conditioning, hot and cold showers and Wi-Fi, and there is a restaurant on site. The owners describe it as part of Mayong's village tourism. Its website did not load when we checked, so use the listing and the map.

Munduk and the Lakes
Munduk sits on a cool ridge above Lakes Tamblingan and Buyan, among coffee and clove gardens, with waterfall trails from the village. Nights are cool, so pack a warm layer. Meme Surung Homestay
Setting: On Jalan Raya Munduk, the main road through the village.
What the listing says: A family-friendly guest house with breakfast, desks in the rooms and mosquito nets over the beds, plus a coffee shop on site.

Best for: Walkers who want to start the waterfall trails from the village.
Swarbali Lodge
Setting: In Kayuputih, near Munduk.
What the listing says: A small lodge of six rooms, built in 2018, which describes itself as comfortable, modern and affordable.

Taruna Homestay
Setting: On the main Singaraja-Gilimanuk road through Pemuteran.
What the listing says: A homestay and villa run by the Taruna family, who describe it as a home away from home and thank past guests for their reviews and support. Its website did not load when we checked.

The Sari Bungalows
Setting: In Pemuteran.
What the listing says: A bungalow resort built in a mix of Balinese and wider Indonesian styles, run with what the owners call family service.

Menjangan Ecolodge
Setting: Inside West Bali National Park, on the shore of the Bali Sea, about 11 km from Pemuteran according to its regency listing. It is run by Plataran, the Indonesian hotel group.
In their words: Eighteen lodges of five types, from shared to private. The dormitory-style camps have rooms with two single beds and air conditioning; four bedrooms share a living room, a pantry and a bathroom with a hot shower. Other camps have two or three twin rooms with balconies, and there are private rooms with a king bed. The lodge was built around education, with a wet lab, an outdoor classroom and an observation deck, and it has a dive centre run with Queen Dive, a PADI dive resort. The park's deer walk along the beach. Entry to the national park is charged separately.

Singaraja
Singaraja is the regency's working capital, a short drive east of Lovina, with markets and the old harbour. See Singaraja old town for what to see.
Hotel Sentral
Setting: On Jalan Ahmad Yani in central Singaraja.
What the listing says: A town hotel with a 24-hour front desk and Wi-Fi in its public areas, for business and leisure travellers.

Best for: A night in town before an early start, or a stay with business in Singaraja.
Making the Budget Go Further
- Book direct. Every place here has a website, an Instagram account or a phone number on its regency listing, and a direct booking lets you ask about a rate for a longer stay.
- Stay longer. A week or more changes the conversation. For a month, see long-term rentals in north Bali.
- Eat where the family eats. Take the homestay dinner or a plate of nasi campur at a warung; see the best warungs in north Bali.
- Share a driver. Split between three or four people, a driver for the day is cheap; private drivers in north Bali explains how it works.
- Book the peak weeks early. The European summer holidays and Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks in the north.

What to Ask Before You Book
- Air conditioning or a fan? In Munduk, is there hot water and a blanket?
- Is breakfast included, and can the family cook dinner?
- Is the bathroom private or shared?
- How far is it, on foot, to the beach or the village centre?
- Can the host arrange a scooter, a driver or an airport pickup? Getting to north Bali sets out the routes.
FAQ
Where can I find cheap accommodation in Lovina? Around Kalibukbuk and along the coast either side. Lovinalife Room & Cafe, Binaria Museum Hotel, Villa Agung Beach Inn and Villa Baba Sunset Beach Inn are all in the regency's budget-hotel list, and each is on or within walking distance of the beach. Ask for a rate for several nights.
Is there a hostel in north Bali? A few places have dormitory beds. MAYONG BALI Villa & Hostel in Mayong, inland from Seririt, has a dormitory room of bunk beds, and Menjangan Ecolodge inside West Bali National Park has shared camps where four twin rooms share a living room and bathroom.
What is a homestay in Bali? A room in or beside a family's house, with the family usually making breakfast and often dinner. It is the cheapest way to stay and the closest you will get to Balinese home life. Raka's Guest House and Rumah Riang in Mayong are two examples on this page.
Are there homestays in Munduk and Pemuteran? Yes. In Munduk, Meme Surung Homestay is on the main road and Swarbali Lodge is in the next village, and Sanak is listed by the regency as a homestay too. In Pemuteran, the Taruna family runs a homestay on the main road.
Is north Bali cheaper than south Bali for accommodation? Generally yes: rooms in the north tend to cost less than the same standard in the south. North Bali on a budget and Bali trip cost set out where the rest of the money goes.
How do I book a homestay in north Bali? Direct, by the website, Instagram account or phone number on each entry above. Ask whether breakfast is included, whether the bathroom is private, and whether the host can collect you.
